MediEvil
Beat October 26, 2017 After beating a game as a guy wearing boxer shorts, like the last game I beat, I figured my next Halloween-ish game should also have some humor, so I decided to play one of the MANY games that I started, but never completed over the years, MediEvil. It's a surprisingly long game - I think it took me between 5 and 5 1/2 hours to make my way through every level. I wasn't expecting it to be more than 2-3 hours, tops. But anyway, MediEvil still has its charm, and while not refined by any means, the combat is fine for what it is. The camera (like many 3D games from this time) is kind of a pain, and some of the platforming is a bit of a pain (usually due to the camera), but for the most part this is an enjoyable experience that many folks look back on fondly, and is worth checking out if you've never attempted to save Gallowmere before.

Layers of Fear
Beat October 7, 2017 I've had Layers of Fear for a few months now, and have been wanting to play it, but I held off until we were closer to Halloween. Now that it's October, I figured I was close enough. Layers of Fear is basically a haunted house simulator. There's some puzzles to be solved, sure, but most of the game just involves the player following a path while the game attempts to scare you during your travel. While I find it fun to take my time and search through every nook and cranny, I can easily see why some people may not enjoy their time here. My only real complaint is that the size of an area to trigger the icon to pick up or interact with items is sometimes ridiculously small...Other than that, Layers of Fear was enjoyable enough where I regret not picking up the DLC when I bought the game (both were on sale) because it would give me reason to walk through the house one more time.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Beat October 6, 2017 Well, now Resident Evil 3 has been beaten to go along with the first two. I have mixed feelings about this game. Overall, I think it might be my favorite of the original 3...But while it's probably my favorite, I think Resident Evil 2 is slightly better. Nemesis stalking you through the story adds some tension to the game...but it doesn't take too long to get used to dodging enemies...and once you're used to dodging enemies, if you've got the bullets, it's not too hard to take him down each time you meet (and you get rewards for doing so) which makes him feel like a pest more than a threat. I do like the fact that you're exploring Raccoon City instead of just one, large building...and returning to the police station of Resident Evil 2 for a brief spell is a nice nod to the previous game. Overall, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a very solid addition to the Resident Evil franchise and well worth checking out if you enjoyed the first two games.

Resident Evil 2
Beat October 2, 2017 With the first Resident Evil beaten, I felt it was time to beat number 2 as well. The second game in the series does a much better job of making players feel uneasy...twitching corpses make you frequently second-guess if you actually managed to kill that zombie or not. In comparison to the first game, I also feel that this one is much easier. I found myself wandering around aimlessly sometimes in the first game, not sure what to do next...in comparison, I managed to get through Resident Evil 2 with very few hiccups. Anyway, I suppose I might as well continue going through the series...beating games that I haven't, and re-visiting the games that I have. We are in the month where Halloween resides, afterall.

Beat October 1, 2017 Much like Earthbound, which I beat last month, Resident Evil is one of those games where I've played it many times, but just never stuck with it long enough to see the end. Well, I can finally scratch it off the list now...just in time for October. I've considered going through the Director's Cut next while the game is still fresh in my mind...But I'll probably move on to something else and return to the Director's Cut when my poor memory forgot most of the game - it's more fun the first time around, and if I can't remember stuff, that's the next best thing. Anyway, Resident Evil put survival horror on the map, and it still holds up fairly well today. Of course, if you want a prettier version, get the HD versions. I like enjoying games in their original form when I can, so if you're like me, nothing beats the poor voice acting and outdated graphics of the original.

Dead In The Water
Beat September 30, 2017 Dead in the Water has been a game that I've always liked...but I've also always been frustrated by it. The game is basically split into two modes - racing and car combat. The car combat part is pretty fun and handles like Twisted Metal or Vigilante 8, but with water physics tossed in...The racing can be fun...but unfortunately, it also handles like Twisted Metal or Vigilante 8, which takes a while to get used to...and even when you are used to it, expect to find yourself getting stuck in corners at least once every other race. Anyway, I finally stuck with Dead in the Water long enough to see it to the end...and while I think that the game is just merely pasable, it does have enough personality that I wish a sequel had come along to (hopefully) improve upon what we have here to make something really good.

Easter Bunny
Beat September 29, 2017 Yeah, I know...We're nowhere near Easter, but I felt like torturing myself this morning so I popped in Easter Bunny's Big Day...And with minimal effort (almost none, honestly) the game is beaten...And I've learned that the Easter Bunny has a friend that helps him called Robo Bunny. Even at my age, this game is teaching me things. But anyway, I think VERY young children might enjoy this game (all I saw was 2 kinds of mini-games and a TON of jigsaw puzzles) but even younger kids might get bored here pretty quickly. I'd recommend just going out and buying a physical jigsaw puzzle for your child instead - your kid will have more of a challenge to help their brain grow and you won't have to ever look at that egg-shaped Robo Bunny...a win-win situation.

Amagon
Beat September 23, 2017 Amagon was the first video game that I ever borrowed from a friend...And I think I must have gotten only to the third level back then, because everything after that point was new to me when I played through. Amagon is a passable scrolling shooter. You don't have infinite bullets, so you have to continue collecting them as you go. After a while, you'll come across a power-up that will allow you (when you press Select) to transform into a muscle-bound giant for a limited time. Wielding a gun, one hit and you're dead. Wielding your bicep guns, you can take as many hits as you want before transforming back...So deciding the right time to transform is key to surviving the game. I tried to beat this a few years ago and deemed it "too tough" and gave up. I was wrong...I just lacked patience. While Amagon isn't easy, with a bit of patience, strategy, and practice you'll find yourself at the "The End" screen like I did.

Destruction Derby
Beat September 23, 2017 You know...I've played Destruction Derby a ton, but I never sat down and played my way through every single league to completely beat the game. I have now. I do enjoy Destruction Derby a lot...unfortunately, the iffy scoring system can lead to frustration. You get points for wrecking cars - for max points, you want to either total an opponent's car or make them spin out 360ยฐ...The problem is that there's always a chance that points aren't rewarded, which can hurt you big-time in the standings on some levels. But anyway, I made my way through and I conquered this game...Like my score suggests, it's passable...The racing isn't great, but it is fun to just ram into other vehicles instead of trying to have a fair, sportsman-like race.

Parasite Eve
Beat September 17, 2017 Much like Metroid Fusion earlier in the month, my poor memory works to my advantage as I've played through Parasite Eve for the first time since...maybe 2000? I forgot much of the game, but a few key spots were quickly remembered as I entered the respective areas. One thing that I did not remember was how short this game was. I beat it in roughly five and a half hours. I thought it was at least a 20 hour game. But anyway, it's still a good game worth checking out if you haven't already. With a mix of survival horror and RPG elements that blends together pretty well, it's a game that fans of either genre will probably enjoy.
