ape added 1 item to Simulation Games - ranked by preference list
Release Date: July 24, 1997 (JP) Publisher: Tecmo Developer: Tecmo Genre: Strategy - Pet SimulationMonster Rancher and Pokemon sometimes get lumped into the same category - afterall, the goal in both games is to have creatures battle each other. While Pokemon is more of an RPG, focusing mainly on the battles, Monster Rancher is more of a strategy/pet simulation game, focusing on how you take care of your monsters. As a result, Monster Rancher is a much more slower-paced game, so fans of Pokemon may not automatically fall in love with Monster Rancher, and vice-versa. Despite the slower pace, Monster Rancher is still very fun, and the ability to put random CDs into your Playstation (music, games, software...anything on CD) and get monsters from them just adds to some of the fun. What monster will appear when putting your Stuart Little 2 soundtrack in the system?...Only one way to find out.

ape added 1 item to Puzzle Games - ranked by preference list
Release Date: September 17, 1998 (JP) Publisher: Mad Duck Productions Developer: Goo! Genre: PuzzleGubble is a puzzling puzzle game (see what I did there?) in that you control a purple dude in a green floating contraption that needs to connect his floating contraption to various tools to undo screws, nails, bolts, etc. from the levels that he traverses. In a sense, it feels like a not-as-fun Pac-Man - like Pac-Man's pellets, when all screws, bolts, nails, or whatever else are removed, the level ends. If the game's levels were all as simplistic as the initial levels, I'd be giving this game a very low score, but the more you play, the more challenging it gets, which allows it to reach "passable" status in my eyes. That said, Gubble never really feels "fun," it just feels like something to pass time when you've got nothing better to play or do.

ape added 1 item to Horror Games - ranked by preference list
Release Date: December 4, 2000 (NA) Publisher: THQ Developer: Heavy Iron Studios Genre: Adventure - HorrorWhen THQ announced that they had acquired the licence to produce games based off of the Evil Dead films, I was excited, yet also skeptical...afterall, many adaptions of television and film in the world of video games fall flat on their face. Still, I purchased the game when it came out...and was disappointed. While Hail to the King isn't absolutely terrible, it also isn't very good. The enemies are plentiful, but with limited ammo and gasoline, you're better off running than fighting...meaning that every fan of Evil Dead needed to refrain from chainsawing and shooting shotgun holes into everything they found, like they probably wanted to...and if they did so anyway, they found a very poor combat system that prevented any encounters from being fun. Hail from the King does well in telling its story, but when the gameplay is as flawed as it is here, most people won't bother to see the story through to the end.

ape added 1 item to Games of 1988 - ranked by preference list
Release Date: November 27, 1988 (JP) Publisher: Sega Developer: Sega Genre: Action - BrawlerWhile I've always loved the concept of Altered Beast, I've never really been a fan of the execution. Over the years, I've come to appreciate it more...but even with that appreciation, let's face it, the controls do feel a little off and the brawling gets very repetitive very quickly...But, then you transform into one of several beasts and the feeling of repetition feels a little delayed. While I've never been a huge fan of Altered Beast, there's no question that it was a system-seller for the Genesis in the beginning and that it's a game that many folks have very fond memories of.
