Final Fantasy II (IV)
Beat January 29, 2018 Almost a speedrun-type playthrough, I decided this weekend that I was going to finally play my way all the way through Final Fantasy II. The last time I played it, I didn't realize that I was basically right there at the end when I stopped...But anyway, it took me slightly longer than the weekend to finish it, but it is done. Final Fantasy II, known as Final Fantasy IV in Japan (and here in North America, for its re-releases) is one of the better 2D Final Fantasy games. The story is well-liked by most that play it, so much that a sequel was released years later on the Wii's WiiWare store. While I like the game quite a bit, I personally feel that it's the weakest of the SNES Final Fantasy trilogy (which isn't a bad thing, by any means)...But that's a personal preference, I've talked to a few folks that consider this to be their favorite in the series overall. I suppose if you like RPGs, it'd be worth checking out to decide for yourself, you spoony bard.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Beat January 14, 2018 Aria of Sorrow is probably the most well-polished of the Castlevania GBA trilogy. The graphics are pretty amazing for a 16-bit game, and the gameplay is equally amazing. Yes, it's another Symphony of the Night-style Castlevania and no, there's not much new here...but the Symphony of the Night-style gameplay seems to hold up, regardless of how many times it gets redone. I probably prefer Circle of the Moon the most out of the GBA triology, but Aria of Sorrow is still a very solid entry in a very solid franchise.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Play time: 73 Hours, 25 Minutes Includes playing all the way through Twisted Tokyo (which makes the rest of the game after that seem WAY too easy), and finishing up all side quests before attempting to finish.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Beat January 4, 2018 Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is why I like to go out of my way to NOT learn about upcoming games - I thought Apocalypse was simply a re-release of SMT4, with extra features...After putting the game in my 3DS, I received a wonderful surprise to find that this was actually a sequel. Anyway, if you liked Shin Megami Tensei IV, there's plenty to like here as well, with nods to the previous game...If you've never played Shin Megami Tensei IV, that's okay, the game's story stands enough on its own where the knowledge of events in SMT4 isn't necessarily required (though it does enhance the story a bit). Anyway, if you'd looking for a solid, portable RPG for your 3DS, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, in my opinion, is near the top of that list.

Street Fighter II
Beat December 31, 2017 Waiting for some friends to come over for New Year's Eve, I figured I could get at least one more game beaten for the year...this was a pretty slow year for me beating games, afterall. So, I thought it'd be nice to play some TurboGrafx-16, or PC Engine, or whatever you'd like to call it. Street Fighter II: Champion Edition is a solid entry in the Street Fighter franchise...but aside from the fact that it's the only version of the game on NEC's console, it's also not really anything special. The only notable difference that I see (aside from this being Japanese, so the names of M. Bison, Balrog, and Vega are switched around from what North Americans are used to) is that the ending credits are a bit nicer to watch, with a roll-call of all the fighters. Unless you want to see the different credits roll, there's not really a reason to go out of your way to play this if you've already got a version on another console.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Beat December 1, 2017 Like many games I love, I plowed through Dragon Quest VIII on the 3DS when it was first released...but then stopped playing it because I didn't want the game to end. Dumb logic, right? I know, there's something wrong with me. But anyway, I consider the PS2 original to be one of the greatest RPGs ever made...and the 3DS version improves on the original in pretty much every way. From adding new party members to add, to new sidequests, this is the definitive version of the game...and the fact that it's portable is fantastic. If you like RPGs and you've never played Dragon Quest VIII, then you owe it to yourself to play this game. If you played Dragon Quest VIII to death, then this is still worth picking up for all of the extras. It very well could be my favorite game on the system...and I'm so glad that I could fall in love with Dragon Quest VIII all over again.

Super Mario Odyssey
Beat November 20, 2017 I'll be honest - I have never beaten a 3D Mario game...I liked a few of them, but they never really held my interest enough to keep me playing until the end. While some Mario games in the last decade were good, none of them managed to hook me like the SNES and NES classics. Super Mario Odyssey has changed that. Easily my favorite 3D Mario game, Odyssey is probably best described as a mix of Mario and Kirby...or maybe more accurately, Mario and Brave Fencer Musashi. Basically, you toss your hat at certain enemies or objects to "possess" them and use their abilities. Each level is interesting and fun to explore...it's easy enough for children to enjoy, but it's also challenging enough so adults won't get bored. Super Mario Odyssey isn't quite good enough to knock Breath of the Wild off as the best game on the Switch, but it's right there. It's been a while since I handed out any perfect scores for games, and in less than a year Nintendo got two of them out of me with their Zelda and Mario franchises. If Breath of the Wild made you think that you might get a Switch, Super Mario Odyssey should turn that "might" into a "will."
