ape added 1 item to Games of 2000 - ranked by preference list
Release Date: June 1, 2000 (JP) Publisher: Konami Developer: KCET Genre: Music - DanceThe childhood rhyme of 3rd is a turd does not apply here. In fact, Dance Dance Revolution 3rd Mix is a vast improvement over an already enjoyable DDR 2nd Remix...such an improvement that even if you had mastered most of the songs on the previous games, aside from new songs in 3rd Mix, you also had several new modes and options. The previous games in the series, which were amazing for their time, immediately felt dated by 3rd Mix due to all of its additions. Folks accustomed to the North American version of Dance Dance Revolution will be more familiar with many of the modes found here. Plus, if you've got a Pocketstation, this is one of the few games that you can use it with. Overall, this is easily one of the best music games ever created...and one that I fondly remember from my college years.

ape added 1 item to Games of 1997 - ranked by preference list
Release Date: July 17, 1997 (JP) Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment Developer: Camelot Software Planning Genre: Sports - GolfWhile golf games were usually fun, Hot Shots Golf added an arcade-like element to the genre along with some personality through its various characters. While later games in the franchise improved upon the formula of the original, Hot Shots Golf is still very enjoyable and well worth a play if you're looking for a timeless sports game on your original Playstation.

ape added 1 item to Games of 1996 - ranked by preference list
Release Date: February 1, 1996 (NA) Publisher: Psygnosis Developer: Psygnosis Genre: Shooter - 3rd PersonIf you were to call Assault Rigs a 3D version of Combat for the original Playstation, you wouldn't be that far off. Assault Rigs essentially is also the first "vehicular combat" game for the Playstation One, as it has players battling against and hunting down various tanks that are also roaming around the same levels as you are. Unfortunately, this all gets very repetitive very quickly...However, as far as early 3D games go, Assault Rigs is definitely passable...Just don't expect a ton of replayability from it.

ape added 1 item to Horror Games - ranked by preference list
Release Date: August 13, 1998 (JP) Publisher: Agetec Developer: From Software Genre: Adventure - HorrorEcho Night is kind of a point-and-click adventure, but with the ability to walk around freely...Imagine a first-person style of gameplay found in the Walking Dead, and you've kind of got it. The downside to the game is how it controls...After playing through from beginning to end, I still felt uncomfortable with how to look up and down, a necessary aspect of the game. On top of that, the story, while interesting and different, is not particularly good. It kind of feels like a B-movie, which I love, but others may groan when playing. As far as horror goes, you spend most of the game on a haunted cruise ship, turning lights on as you enter each hallway or room, since bad ghosts avoid the light (but good ghosts have no problem in it, I guess). It's really not very scary, though sometimes you will find yourself frantically looking for a light switch or an exit to the room that you're in to prevent yourself from being murdered by a malicious ghost that appears. Overall, Echo Night is a decent game - not great, but far from bad. If you're a fan of point-and-click adventure games or games with a horror theme to them, I'd definitely recommend that you check this out.

ape added 1 item to Fighting Games - ranked by preference list
Release Date: April 30, 1998 (NA) Publisher: Midway Developer: Saffire Genre: FightingI had seen Bio FREAKS in random retro game stores for quite a while...but I never actually bothered to look into what kind of game it was. I honestly expected some sort of first-person shooter...Instead, Bio FREAKS is an interesting, but barely passable, fighting game. Basically, it feels like Mortal Kombat with guns...and with a final boss that makes Shao Khan look like a small child. With the ability to cut your opponents limbs off (which, gore aside, adds a neat level of strategy - you can't use your arms if you don't have them anymore) and some sex appeal tossed in (one of the fighters wears a shirt that only covers the top of her boobs), I think Bio FREAKS tried to cover up its flaws with shock value. That said, this is unique enough to actually be worth checking out if you're a fan of fighting games. If you're not, this game does absolutely nothing to turn you into a fan of the genre.
